Music Monday 7 | German Songs

I have previously talked about music from Austria but only featured English spoken songs. However, there is a lot of great German spoken music out there, which probably never gets any attention from people who don’t speak the language. It’s a complicated language, which is why I think rhyming in German is an art form of its own. I don’t know if these songs have the same impact on someone who isn’t fluent in German which is why I will have bits and pieces of the lyrics translated to the English language.

Wir sind Helden – Wenn es passiert

Wir sind Helden (‘We are Heroes’) is one of my favorite German pop bands thay I’ve been listening to for many years. It is hard picking just one of their songs to feature as they have many more gems worth listening.

They that have no tears will be blind tomorrow.
If you don’t love that, what then?
I want to be there when time freezes,
I want to be there when it explodes.
And if through that I lose my mind,
I want to be there when it happens.

Jennifer Rostock – Hengstin

Another band I’ve been listening to for what feels like an eternity. Like no others, Jennifer Rostock captured the German emo rock/teenage angst zeitgeist. As they’ve grown, they released this track, which is a very unexpected take on feminism.

If you don’t dare to say something, you don’t feel being gagged
I don’t believe that my gender is the weaker one
I don’t believe that my body is my weapon
I don’t believe that my body is your business

Leave your deepest thoughts or keep them to yourself.
