Are Coldplay milking the LGBT+ demographic?

German version below | Deutsche Version weiter unten

This weekend I was at a Coldplay show in Vienna with some friends. We were excited about the concert and were not disappointed. Even with ticket prices well over € 100, I would not have expected such a spectacular event featuring laser shows, pyrotechnics, fireworks and loooooaads of glitter and confetti. This article won’t be a review of the show, I just wanted to mention beforehand that I had a great time. Coldplay played a lot of new material and most of their classic tunes. They had great support bands (Lyves and Tove-Lo), three stage, three huge monitors (though I was lucky enough to be close enough to see the band at most times) and every attendant got a LED bracelet which lit up to the rhythm of the music. On the downside, the plastic bracelets seem like a huge waste as there were no containers to recycle them. Also, the organization sucked – the cheapest non-alcoholic drink was water at € 4 (~ US$ 4.50) and free drinking water wasn’t provided! I believe that this practice is illegal and a violation of basic human rights. Besides that, the show was remarkable and I will never forget the feeling of dancing in glitter rain to ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’.

But the whole time I wondered why everything seemed so… gay. Do I need to explain why I felt this way or are the pictures sufficient? I’m not just talking about the logo and the band’s new Corporate Image; I’m talking about EVERYTHING. The shirts, the merch, the stage, the lights, even the fireworks were in the colours of the rainbow. Does this mean that Coldplay support gay rights? Or are they simply trying to please their LGBT+ fans? As far as I know, none of the band members are gay. And I never heard about Coldplay supporting any LGBT+ charities (correct me if I’m wrong) or speaking about LGBT+ rights at all.

Quick side note: I am aware that the gay community doesn’t own the colours of the rainbow. Everybody may use them as they please. Nevertheless, rainbow colours are somewhat associated with the LGBT+ movement.

During the show Chris Martin asked the crowd to ‘send love’ to Syria, the USA, the UK etc. but he didn’t mention any specific cause or world problem. A few tracks later, he praised Vienna for being a musical place. He said that the band stayed in the city for ‘a couple of days’ prior to the show because they love it here. Exactly one day before the Coldplay show on June 11, a huge charity event for HIV/AIDS awareness and LGBT+ rights took place in Vienna. It is called the Life Ball and you may have already heard of it. If not, you can read up upon it here: Official Life Ball Homepage. If Coldplay support the LGBT+ community (as insinuated by the visual appearance), why didn’t they attend? I am not saying that they have to, I’m just saying that they could have, considering how many of Coldplay’s fans are part of the LGBT+ community.

So, I went on a Google Deep Dive to find out more. I looked up if Coldplay support any LGBT+ charities or organizations but couldn’t find anything. I didn’t even find any of the band member’s comments on the situation of the gay rights movement. I did however, find an interesting interview of Chris Martin joking about being gay (links below). This reminded me of Robbie Williams who often claimed to be gay shortly prior to the release of his records. I also found many other media outlets and bloggers writing about Coldplay’s visual appearance. Many of them were confused by the obvious gay insinuations of Coldplay’s colour scheme too as Coldplay don’t have an established connection to the LGBT+ community.

If Coldplay are trying to appeal to the valuable LGBT+ demographic they certainly are not the first musicians doing so. They are in good company of Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Madonna, Cher, Kylie Minoque, the Spice Girls or the already mentioned Robbie Williams.

What do you think about this? Is it plausible that Coldplay want to milk the LGBT+ demographic? Did I miss any connections of Coldplay and the LGBT+ community? And if you have ever been to a Coldplay show, did you have a similar experience? As I said before, the show itself was lovely and I would go again 100%. But if Coldplay use rainbow colours everywhere, should they not explicitly speak up about gay rights too?

To end this article on a positive note, I caught a particularly funny moment of the show on cam. Chris Martin messed up the lyrics for ‘Princess of China’, so they had to start over. If you’re intrigued, you can watch my video footage and laugh along:

Juni hat der Life Ball (Life Ball Homepage) stattgefunden.

Was denkt ihr darüber?

I feel the same way. Why hasn’t Coldplay overtly supported the LGBT+ community? Right now, Coldplay is touring many cities in the USA during June, which is pride month! Not even a peep at the Chicago concerts!

I never really thoyght of it like that before. Maybe they just do it because they like the effects, but as you said, they may also be doing it to get more money

It just really hit me at the show. They could use literally any colour palette and choose rainbows. They have to be aware of the meaning behind that even if they just use it because they like it.
